OBON Network Spotlight: Welcoming the Newest Waves!

We’re thrilled to invite you to our next OBON Webinar: “Introducing OBON’s Newest Waves: Meet the Latest Endorsed Projects”, taking place on 16 June 2025, from 11:30 to 13:00 (UK time) via Zoom.
RECORDING NOW AVAILABLE ON YOUTUBE
This special session will spotlight three exciting new additions to the OBON network, each breaking new ground in biomolecular ocean observation. These projects bring innovative approaches, strong local-to-global links, and bold scientific vision to our growing OBON community.
Join us to meet the teams behind ANEMONE, BLOW, and PASTIME, and discover how they’re contributing to the future of ocean biomolecular and biodiversity science.
🌊 ANEMONE (All Nippon eDNA Monitoring Network)
Presented by Michio Kondo – Tohoku University, Japan
Project profile
From coastal shores to deep-sea habitats, ANEMONE is building a comprehensive eDNA network across Japan. This project integrates scientific institutions, local governments, and citizen science to advance biodiversity monitoring using eDNA. Michio Kondo will introduce how ANEMONE is creating a scalable model for ocean observation, one that’s open, inclusive, and globally relevant.
🐋 BLOW (Biomarkers in the Breath)
Presented by Courtney Alice Waugh – Nord University, Norway
Project profile
Whale breath holds secrets, and BLOW is unlocking them. This project pioneers the use of microRNA biomarkers in exhaled breath to study cetacean health, stress, and physiology, all in a non-invasive way. Join Courtney Alice Waugh to explore how this innovative research can transform how we study and protect cetaceans.
❄️ PASTIME (Present and past climate change impacts on Norwegian fjord ecosystems)
Presented by Agnes Weiner – NORCE – Norwegian Research Centre, Norway
PASTIME dives deep, literally and temporally. Using cutting-edge techniques, this project investigates both current and historical impacts of climate change on Norwegian fjords. With its unique time-layered perspective, PASTIME enhances our understanding of how these vital ecosystems are changing, and what that means for their future resilience.
🎥 Can’t make it live? The recordings will be available afterwards on OBON’s YouTube channel, allowing you to revisit the content or catch up if you cannot attend live.
