Analysis of Mangrove Ecosystem by eDNA

Initiated in 2020 through the JSPS Core-to-Core Program, this initiative aims to achieve global mangrove biodiversity observation by 2030 using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding.

While our current network focuses on countries across Asia and Africa, we have expanded collaboration to Latin America to lay the groundwork for a truly global research collective. As a key Ocean Decade component, we collaborate closely with the endorsed program OBON (Ocean Biomolecular Observing Network) and the endorsed action ANEMONE Global. Our primary goal is to establish eDNA analysis as a standardized global methodology for monitoring rapidly declining mangrove ecosystems. A major priority is empowering early-career researchers (ECOPs) through international workshops and field training. By involving partners from Africa, LDCs, and SIDS, we ensure equitable participation in ocean science, delivering evidence-based solutions for the sustainable management and resilience of global coastal ecosystems.
